The Victory Lap Quarter
And just like that... 4th quarter is upon us. I am almost done with my first year of teaching! Admittedly, I've learned a lot, but who doesn't in their first year?
A few things:
1.) Teachers and schools all across the country are in uncharted waters right now. The COVID-19 is impacting the entire world. The Ohio governor, Mike Dewine, has called for an "extended spring break" for all public Ohio schools grades K-12. My fellow teachers and I can only say one thing: this is crazy. Many questions are being asked with very little answers. It's a little scary; nevertheless, we must persist. As a result, I am typing this from the comfort of my home office today with a cup of iced coffee by my side. I'm sure I will look back on this moment several years from now and never forget the impact that this Coronavirus has made!
2.) 3rd quarter has been my hardest quarter so far. In retrospect, I've been trying to think about why exactly, it's been so difficult for me. I could blame it on the attitudes of the students, the looming teacher positions being cut from my district, or just the fact that my first year as an educator is catching up with me... but it's good to know that my positive attitude can stand the test of time!
3.) Ultimately, I am proud of myself. There are days, granted, where I feel like I am not doing a good enough job. There are days when I feel like I am not fit to be in this position. I prove myself wrong every time. I know that most of my students feel like my classroom is a positive place for the short 50 minutes I see them every day.
The only thing I suggested for my students to do in these uncertain times is to read. Read to escape. Read for information. Read for enjoyment.
I saw this quote on a social media post and it made me feel so much better. Read it again if you have to.
Conversations will not be cancelled.
Relationships will not be cancelled.
Love will not be cancelled.
Songs will not be cancelled.
Reading will not be cancelled.
Self-care will not be cancelled.
Hope will not be cancelled.
May we lean into the good stuff that remains.
