Remake of a Classical Poem: Oreos, Oreos, Wherefore Art Thou Oreos?
Sometimes your students don’t need to start from scratch. Taking a piece of literature and changing it to make it your own can be just as productive (and a lot more fun). This activity can branch from teaching satire or parody as well. An assignment like this can help your students really play around with words and it isn't as intimidating as writing an entire poem on their own. The outline of the poem is already there! Take the structure and run with it!
Here is an example I made that I just love!
Or if thou wilt not, be but milk's only love
And you'll no longer be my favorite cookie.
Tis but thy delectable taste that is my weakness:
Thou art flawless, though not a full meal.
What's an Oreo? It is nor vegetable nor meat
Nor fruit nor seasoning nor anything but
Blissful heaven. O be some other food.
What's in a food? That which we call "unhealthy"
By any other name would still taste as scrumptious;
So Oreos would, were they not unhealthy call'd,
Retain that dear perfection which they owe
Without limited portion size. Oreos, keep thy name,
And for that crinkly blue package, which is a part of thee,
Open and eat all Oreos myself.
Here is an example I made that I just love!
"O Oreos, Oreos, Wherefore Art Thou Oreos?"
-Adapted by Morgan Bryant from Juliet's Soliloquy in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet
O Oreos, Oreos, wherefore art thou Oreos?
Deny thy chocolate goodness and refuse thy cream.Or if thou wilt not, be but milk's only love
And you'll no longer be my favorite cookie.
Tis but thy delectable taste that is my weakness:
Thou art flawless, though not a full meal.
What's an Oreo? It is nor vegetable nor meat
Nor fruit nor seasoning nor anything but
Blissful heaven. O be some other food.
What's in a food? That which we call "unhealthy"
By any other name would still taste as scrumptious;
So Oreos would, were they not unhealthy call'd,
Retain that dear perfection which they owe
Without limited portion size. Oreos, keep thy name,
And for that crinkly blue package, which is a part of thee,
Open and eat all Oreos myself.
